Waldorf is a city in Maryland's Charles County. The population was 68,772 at the 2010 census. Waldorf is the third largest city in Southern Maryland, behind Lexington Park and California. The city is bisected by U.S. Route 301, which connects Washington, D.C., with Delaware and the Eastern Shore of Maryland. The southernmost section of Waldorf is served by the terminus of the Southern Maryland Blue Line light rail line from Washington, D.C.'s Navy Yard neighborhood that began operation on December 17, 2006.
Historically agricultural tobacco farming region, Charles County has undergone tremendous growth since the late 20th century due to suburbanization as part of Greater Washington, D.C.. Much of this growth has occurred in Waldorf. The city is home to St. Charles Towne Center, the county's largest shopping mall.
Waldorf's history begins with the settlement of German immigrants in the Maryland colony during the 17th century. One of these immigrants, Dr. George Maurice Zabriskie, built his estate known as Sommerhausen near what would become downtown Waldorf. Sommerhausen was inherited by Zabriskie's great-grandson, George John Zabriskie, who began its restoration in 1897 and renamed it Avalon. The years between World War I and II were a time of transition for Avalon and Waldorf. While many residents still farmed tobacco, the advent of better transportation and the growth of Washington, D.C. made commuting possible and resulted in increasing suburbanization. The Zabriskie House burned to the ground in 1935 but was rebuilt by George John Zabriskie's son, George Maurice Zabriskie IV.
The Southern Maryland Electric Railway (SMECO) ran electric streetcars from Washington, D.C., to Indian Head from 1901 until 1937 when it converted to buses. The streetcar line ran down what is now Old Washington Road (MD Route 228) and Mitchellville Road (MD Route 214). The construction of U.S. Route 301 in the 1920s brought increased traffic and development to Waldorf and also served as a dividing line between the town's white and black residents.
In the late 20th century, suburbanization increased in Waldorf and the surrounding region. The Washington metropolitan area's rapid expansion resulted in population growth throughout Southern Maryland. Between 1970 and 1990, Charles County's population nearly doubled due to this suburbanization. This increase led to the construction of numerous new housing developments in Waldorf such as St. Charles Towne Center, which opened in 1988 as the county's first regional mall.
The city of Waldorf was incorporated in 1956 and has a mayor-council form of government. The five-member city council is elected at-large while the mayor is elected by the entire city. The current mayor is Dwight Baker.
Waldorf is located in southern Maryland, about 30 miles (48 km) south of downtown Washington, D.C.. Charles County, which forms the Waldorf Micropolitan Statistical Area, is located in the southern part of the state of Maryland. According to the United States Census Bureau, Waldorf has a total area of 17.1 square miles (44.2 km2), of which 16.9 square miles (43.8 km2) is land and 0.2 square miles (0.4 km2), or 1.21%, is water.[22] The city's elevation ranges from sea level at its southern border with Prince George's County to about 135 feet (41 m) above sea level near its northern border with Calvert County.
Waldorf is located in the humid subtropical climate zone (Köppen Cfa).[24] The city experiences hot, humid summers and cool winters. Temperatures in Waldorf typically range from an average low of 33 °F (1 °C) in January to an average high of 86 °F (30 °C) in July. The record low temperature of −2 °F (−19 °C) was recorded on February 10, 1899, and the record high temperature of 105 °F (41 °C) was recorded on August 6, 1918.
Precipitation is fairly evenly distributed throughout the year but is slightly higher during the summer months. On average, Waldorf receives 4.65 inches (118 mm) of precipitation per year. The city experiences an average of 18 days with measurable precipitation per year. Snowfall is relatively rare in Waldorf, averaging only 6.9 inches (17 cm) per year. The most snowfall in one month was 22.0 inches (56 cm) in February 2010.[25]
